Academia lacks diversity. Because of this, minoritized students are often harmed in the process of completing their degrees and do not feel like they belong. Although the issue of underrepresentation in higher education stems from global, systemic issues of racism, classicism, ableism, and sexism in our society – which ultimately require global and system-level solutions – at a local level I am committed to: (1) creating an inclusive environment where all students can succeed, (2) contributing my time to supporting the interests of minoritized minorities in science, (3) sharing my experiences as a woman and an immigrant in science, and (4) using my research to inform how we can reduce inequalities.
Some of my recent contributions to increasing Diversity and Inclusion include:
- Mentor in the SPUR program (2018-present)
- Member of the CMU Psych Diversity & Inclusion committee (2017-2020)
- Affiliated with the Collaboratory Against Hate (2021-present)
- Secure REU supplements to support undergraduate students from minoritized backgrounds in science
- Discuss how so-called "achievement gaps" are better understood as lack of access to learning opportunities [paper]
- Study the impact of conversations about systemic racism on children's understanding of racial inequalities
